ALBUM REVIEW | The Smiths
By: Josie Morss
The Smiths were a Manchester-based band, who might be often unknown among my generation. Bonded by the talents of Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce, Craig Gannon, and Dale Hibbert, The Smiths have been known for recording alternative rock and indie music. Their second most popular album called The Smiths, held some of their most loved songs. A few of them being “This Charming Man” and “Hand In Glove.” The songs themselves are intoxicating, full of smooth vibes and catchy lyrics. A prime example of this is in the chorus of “Hand In Glove.” The “And if the people stare/Then the people stare” lyrics, most definitely stands out as catchy lyrics, because they emulate life’s vulnerabilities when it comes to sexuality. Eventually getting to that point where you break free from the fear, just to be your complete and utter self, and can be the you that you always knew you could be. It also sets the tone for smooth vibes throughout the whole song. Every song on the album comes banded with its own story which ultimately draws you in. “This Charming Man” has quite the story of its own. The song is all about a boy whose bike broke down. He was stopped by a charming man in a car and gladly went in. The two flirted and from there made plans for that night with each other. These stories leave an incurable addiction to their catchy tunes. I loved every minute of The Smiths. The only thought running through my mind was “Where have you been all my life?!”
