REVIEW | Bring Me the Horizon — “True Friends”

by Hana Simons

“True Friends” is the anthem for the broken hearted, like myself. Bring Me The Horizon stepped up their game tremendously with this song. For those of you who say BMTH has lost the game and sold out, they truly haven’t. They have grown up not only personally and musically, but lyrically too.

I wouldn’t hold my breath if I was you
Cause I’ll forget but I’ll never forgive you
Don’t you know, don’t you know?
True friends stab you in the front.
I wouldn’t hold my breath if I was you
You broke my heart & there’s nothing you can do.
And now you know, now you know
True friends stab you in the front

“True Friends” (2015)

Versus my previously favorite song by BMTH (for some reason unknown even to myself), “Pray for Plaques.”

Sold out the love that she had, with a cut of the throat. Drinks all round on her before she strolls to the moat
The sun goes down, and so does she.

“Pray for Plaques” (2006)

These newer lyrics are better because there is meaning behind them. They talk about how friends break your heart and nothing will fix it. What also makes “True Friends” such a powerful anthem is the lack of swearing. Crude language can sometimes get a point across. The message is so bold and clear that it can stand alone.

Yeah, Oli Sykes doesn’t scream much anymore. But after years and years of screaming and heavy drug use he decided it was time to change. He wanted to take a new path and in my opinion they’re doing a smashing job.

“True Friends” is not only catchy, relatable, and fun. It has a deep meaning and also doubles as the sickest lyric video I’ve ever seen. Cheers to Bring Me The Horizon.
