REVIEW | Tonight Alive’s successful second release “The Other Side”

If you haven’t yet heard anything from Tonight Alive, it’s likely that you will be seeing more about them within the next few years. Originating from Sydney, Australia, the pop-punk rock band is on the rise within the rock community. Tonight Alive released their first album What Are You So Scared Of? in late 2011. Previously, the band (comprised of guitarists Whakaio Taaki and Jake Hardy, bassist Cam Adler, drummer Matt Best, and vocalist Jenna McDougall) had released three EPs in 2010 and 2011. After two years of touring with other bands around the world and in their home country, Tonight Alive released The Other Side in September of 2013. Following this release was their first headlining tour across the US, which even stopped here in Minnesota at THE GARAGE.

Driven by powerful melodies and lyrics, Tonight Alive’s second full length album The Other Side succeeds at showcasing the band’s full talent. Songs like “Bathwater” and “Complexes” allow vocalist Jenna McDougall to show her vocal range, with notes ranging from low to impressively high. Her voice is somehow able to retain its strength even at the highest notes. Songs like “The Fire” show the band’s ability to write and execute successful guitar intros, drawing listeners into the songs right away. “Lonely Girl” displays how well the band works together, every member’s sounds combine and fit perfectly into place; each note and beat is meaningfully placed and it shows. Containing a perfect mix of relatable heartfelt songs and upbeat ones that can get a crowd off their feet with excitement and enthusiasm, The Other Side is quite a successful sophomore release for the band.

Though their sound is completely unique, Tonight Alive is most similar in sound to bands like VersaEmerge and We Are The In Crowd. I recommend the song “Lonely Girl” for a first listen. It gives a good taste of what Tonight Alive’s sound is like, and lets the listener into their world.

The future looks bright for Tonight Alive, so if you like The Other Side and their other music, keep an eye out for new music within the next year. It is confirmed that a new album is in the process of being written, according to an interview by Spotlight Report with Jenna and Whakaio, though no release date has been announced yet.

Tonight Alive is growing in popularity around the world and are gaining fans with each new album and song they release. It’s amazing how much they’ve grown in popularity after touring with bigger bands and being on Warped Tour. The recent interest in the band has even led to a spot for them on the soundtrack for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. “The Edge,” their newest single, will be featured on that soundtrack. Give it a listen if you would like to see what is in store for Tonight Alive.
