REVIEW | At Mourning’s End: “In Sheep’s Clothing”

Founded in 2010, At Mourning’s End is known around the state bringing a darker side to hardcore. This group shows off the local scene with a unique but similar sound to bands such as Eyes Set to Kill. At Mourning’s End released a self-titled album back in May of 2012 with featured singles of “Lives Intertwined” and “Spear the Wolf,” with a new EP coming soon. They’re known well at THE GARAGE and you may have seen them if you were at the last Cornerstone festival. Near the beginning of 2013, the band went through a member/lineup change and became the band you know today.

Recently At Mourning’s End released the first single for their new EP called “In Sheep’s Clothing.” The song starts out right away with a breakdown, to get you pumped up and ready. With many hard breakdowns and smooth transitions, this is a well-written song with musicians that know what they’re doing. The entire song will make you just want to jump around and throw down–it completely shows off the local hardcore scene here in Minnesota.

Not all the vocal parts work for me, but my favorite component is around the 3:45 mark, when the song goes into a different direction. At Mourning’s End slows things down for a dramatic break, then picks it up again bringing it to a fantastic completion, which shows a really strong emotional side. The song does seem to be cut off, whether that’s just Bandcamp or the actual recording, you can expect a more dramatic ending when played live–and hopefully on the EP.

“In Sheep’s Clothing” is a very good song that left me pleased due to its well-executed breakdowns and the band’s willingness to let some emotions break through. If their EP The Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing is half as good as what this single is, things are looking right. If you’ve never heard of At Mourning’s End, now is the time to check them out. This full length EP will be out sometime soon–keep up with us and the band for more info.
